Tall Grasses (2020)
GlowNights 2020 – Jackson Hole, Wyoming
This installation reimagines common tall grasses as plants that emit light in reaction to their surrounding environmental conditions. Whereas natural grasses shift in color throughout the seasons, the tall grass in this installation changes color minute by minute with the daily temperature. Just as natural grass sways with the wind, this dynamic artificial grass reacts to the breeze by increasing the activity of the light patterns.
Tall Grasses is composed of individually standing one-inch tubes, each staked in the ground and varying between three and six feet in height. Each piece is constructed of an array of LED lights surrounded by a frosted acrylic tube and containing a temperature and vibration sensor, along with a microprocessor and software allowing independent operation from the group.
